Acting Associate Pastor Search

In January, 2017, Church Council, Human Resources, and our Senior Pastor considered it best to look for an "Acting Associate Pastor." This means that we will seek a person to fulfill the position on a temporary contract, and will remain open to hiring that person long-term for the position if it seems to be a good fit. We also decided to keep the job portfolio the same (i.e., Director of lifelong Christian Education, co-coordinator of pastoral care, pastoral liaison for our Stretching into Justice efforts). We are moving forward with the process as efficiently and as faithfully as we can.

The Search and Call committee includes Holly VandeWall, chair, Sasha Steinbaugh, Katy McGraw, Doug Creed, and Kent French, Senior Pastor.

April 27, 2017, Update

Dear United Parish,

We are grateful for your continued prayers and patient expectation as your Acting Associate Pastor Search Committee and Senior Pastor continue our work. Amid our Senior Pastor’s orthopedic surgery and recovery, Holy Week and preparing for the Brahms’ Requiem, we have continued to meet, interview candidates and discern.

As a reminder, we are looking for an “Acting Associate Pastor,” meaning that we will bring a new pastor on for a year-long contract, through June 30, 2018. Toward the end of that contract, we will discern together whether it is a good fit for this pastor to stay on long-term with our congregation.

We have received about 15 profiles and applications of several qualified people, across denominations. Of our three denominations, the United Church of Christ continues to be the most proactive in sending us candidates. As in previous searches, we also attract a good number of LGBT candidates because of our unequivocal open and affirming, reconciling, welcoming stance.

We have interviewed six candidates, and narrowed it down to three finalists. Kent has conducted one-on-one interviews with these candidates (two completed, one scheduled). After these interviews, we will then follow up to have candidates meet with members of our community who are directly involved with the Associate Pastor portfolio (Children & Youth and Adult Deepening, Stretching into Justice, and Hearts & Hands).

We have every reasonable expectation that we will bring an Acting Associate Pastor on board by July 1, 2017, at the latest. We ask for your continued prayers and patience as we seek to find the right pastor for this time in our congregation's life.

In faith,
The Search and Call Committee

March 22, 2017 Update

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Given Kent's recent accident and surgery, some of you may be eager to know how things are progressing in finding a new Associate Pastor.  I want to let you know about our plans to move forward with finding someone to fill this role and to assure you that we will do our best to provide you with regular updates on progress in the coming weeks.

In January, as we considered our next steps, Council, Human Resources, and our Senior Pastor considered it best to look for an "Acting Associate Pastor."  This means that we will seek a person to fulfill the position on a temporary contract, and will remain open to hiring that person long-term for the position if it seems to be a good fit.  We also decided to keep the job portfolio the same (i.e., Director of lifelong Christian Education, co-coordinator of pastoral care, pastoral liaison for our Stretching into Justice efforts) and, without the need to write a new job description, were able to act promptly to begin this search.  We are moving forward with the process as efficiently as we can.

We posted an advertisement with our three denominations and asked the previous search committee team to assist the Senior Pastor in the process.  We have received great interest from several qualified candidates across denominations, and the committee is in the process of interviewing candidates, with the hopes of bringing an Acting Associate Pastor to us by late Spring.

We welcome your prayers and any input.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please let one of the following people know: Senior Pastor Kent French, Council Moderator Ben McGraw, Human Resources Ministry Team Convener Kathy Phenix, or Search Team Leader Holly VandeWall. Peace,
Ben McGraw, Moderator
