The Directions logo captures the essence of United Parish vision. Please take a moment to read
and reflect upon the many meanings that are embodied in this dynamic logo. It will deepen your
understanding of this visual icon and allow it to serve as a mnemonic device, a continual reminder
of the directions we wish to head as a parish.

Notes from Session I

Each week we will summarize the discussions from the small groups that are participating in this phase of the visioning journey. In keeping with the ground rules of this process, individual comments are all anonymous.

Talk Back Notes

2-12-09 Notes

We’ve been fortunate to have had three wonderful leaders of transformation in the mainline Protestant church share their insights with us over the past year. Tony Robinson, the author of “Transforming Congregational Culture,” was our guest preacher last spring. His book was a key resource for the Vision Force Team in the early stages of pulling together the visioning process we are all presently engaged in.

Then last November, Mary Luti, Visiting Professor of Worship and Preaching at Andover Newton, shared with us the transformative experience of First Church in Cambridge when she was their pastor in 2002/03. Most recently, Jeff Jones, author of “Traveling Together” and pastor of Plymouth Baptist Church, spoke with us about the lessons he has learned helping churches work through with the American Baptist Convention.

In this phase (Program of Individual Discernment), everyone in the congregation is invited to make room for God on a daily basis in an intentional, specific way . . . for two weeks. In this step, we will practice --or learn for the first time-- how to listen for God’s guidance by meditating upon scripture.

Rev. Pat Coughlin's sermon on Jan. 25, 2009. The sermon is very pertinent to visioning, and like all of Pat's sermons, very well written.

THE STORY IS A FAMILIAR ONE, ISN’T IT? JESUS IS WALKING ALONG THE SHORE OF THE SEA OF GALILEE... keep reading.
