The Grace of Giving

Church provides us with so many good things: community, a place to grow spiritually, opportunities to pause and reflect on what life is all about, ways to serve others and work for social justice. In order to offer these good things, churches, like all community and spiritual organizations, require the resources to employ a staff, maintain a building, sustain ministries and programs, and give back to the wider world. Sharing our resources in common and giving generously are at the heart of the Christian faith.  "For God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7, New Living Translation adapted).

The Grace of Giving

Giving something back to God, usually by way of the causes that promote and do God-work in the world, is a spiritual practice, just like prayer worship, meditaion, Bible study, faith conversations and serving others.  This year's stewardship theme is "The Grace of Giving," which you will hear more about in the upcoming weeks.  In the meantime we encourage you to think about the grace behind the gifts you receive as well as the gifts that you prayerfully share with God in service of your church community.  (Read Pastor Kent's Blog on the subject.)

We are also starting a new tradition for our stewardship season this year!  Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 21st, which will be known as "Consecration Sunday."  During worship we will place our pledges into the offering plate as we bless the coming year of mission, ministry and worship at United Parish.  After worship we will all gather in Willett Hall for a celebratory luncheon.  We hope you are able to be here for this special day.
