Virtual Walk for Hunger - May 2, 2021

United Parish has faithfully supported the annual Walk for Hunger, reaching beyond Brookline to fund hunger programs throughout Massachusetts. This year, we are still in the pandemic and the Walk will be virtual, taking contributions through this United Parish Team web page or via check made out to “Project Bread” and sent to the Church Office (210 Harvard St, Brookline, MA 02446). The Missions Giving Team is again challenging us to raise $5,000 to be matched with mission funds.

We are proud to have been one of the top fundraising teams last year, raising $13,650. We need to let our neighbors who are in the midst of economic difficulty know that we have not forgotten them and we stand with them.

The Walk’s parent organization, Project Bread, supports food pantries and meal programs, helps organize new programs, runs the Food Source Hotline 800-645-8333, studies hunger needs, and organizes advocates to improve food accessibility.

A contribution through this link is the quickest way to participate. But for those who will miss the exercise and fellowship of the Walk, you can also join a United Parish Sacred Stroll in the Walk’s honor on Saturday, May 1.  Watch for further information.

You can also invent your own “Walk” activity: register as a United Parish Team member (for free) and write the description of your own (or your group’s) challenge, inviting others to click on your name on our Team page, then contribute to the Walk under your name. You can notify your friends by creating an email/Facebook/Instagram/Twitter link direct to your team member page.

Last year, United Parish high school student Melanie C. created a substitute “Walk” activity and impressed her friends with a video of her challenge to keep a soccer ball in the air for 200 kicks. She raised $1,000!   Melanie suggests United Parish families, Sunday School class, or other group register a member and work on a challenge together. Your goal could be a total number of steps on your phone pedometer in April, a bike ride, photo(s) or poster(s) about healthy eating, etc. Post your idea in our Realm church directory news feed for the congregation to see. We know this church can get creative. Your community thanks you!
