Summer Book Group on Zoom

Date:
July 19, 2022 - 7:30pm to 9:00pm

This July, you are invited to engage with a book and/or video resources based on civil rights activist Valarie Kaur’s book See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love.

Kaur’s approach to “Revolutionary Love” involves choosing to labor for others, for our opponents, and for ourselves to transform the world around us. It begins with wonder: You are a part of me I do not yet know. In the book, she explains how she came to “see no stranger” by telling of her life experience as an American-born Sikh who lived through the violence toward Sikhs after 9/11, through education and activism in divinity school and law school, and as a filmmaker, lawyer, and mother.

This year, you can prepare for our discussion in one or more ways, depending on your time and interest:
1. Reading the 300-page book See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love.
2. Watching her 23-minute TED talk https://www.ted.com/talks/valarie_kaur_3_lessons_of_revolutionary_love_i...
3. Reading an 8-page summary of her Revolutionary Love Compass of ten core practices of revolutionary love. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ILJ9a6XIlV-p-QTGNaY4iBPD8BN3q2ge/view

In our discussion groups in July, we will explore the Revolutionary Love ideas in the context of our own lived experience as individuals and as part of faith community that draws from the life of Jesus as an example of revolutionary love.

Discussion group opportunities are tentatively scheduled for:
- Tuesday, July 19 from 7:30-9 pm on Zoom
- Sunday, July 24 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM in Memorial Park and will include a light supper that meets United Parish COVID guidelines
Please contact Deb H. at adultdeepening@upbrookline.org if you would like to participate and if you would like a copy of the book. A limited number of books are available from United Parish for a suggested donation of $10 each.
