Advent Adult Programs

Prayer Retreat

Saturday, November 30 from 10:30am-1:30pm, includes lunch

Start the Advent season by sharing some group and individual prayer and silence with others. We'll try some ancient and refreshed spiritual practices, and share a mindful meal of soup and bread. It’s a lovely opportunity to explore how to use prayer to shift from the hectic to the holy during Advent.

Advent Study: In Light of the World by Amy-Jill Levine

2 classes before Christmas: December 8 and 22, 1 in Epiphany: January 12

In  Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent, professor and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus. Join her as she traces the Christmas narrative through the stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, and the visit from the Magi. These stories invite conversations around connections of the Gospel stories to the Old Testament/Hebrew Scriptures, the role of women in first-century Jewish culture, the importance of Mary’s visitation and the revolutionary implications of Mary’s Magnificat, the census and the stable, and the star of Bethlehem and the flight to Egypt.

Prayer Partners for Advent

Sign up and we’ll pair you up with someone, or you can choose someone you know. Make a covenant with your Prayer Partner to connect at least 15 minutes each week of Advent by phone or in person. In addition to sharing your own prayer needs and approaches to prayer, the Adult Deepening team will also provide Prayer Partners with a brief guide for ways you might get to know each other, and ways to try praying together or individually on behalf of the other.

Advent Devotional

Contribute your writing, poems, pictures by Wednesday, November 20. We are looking for members and friends of United Parish to add to the 2019 United Parish Advent Devotional booklet that will be printed for the 2019 Advent season. Come to the writing workshop on Sunday, November 17 from 9am-10am in the Deepening Room to polish your draft and get peer feedback.

1. Consider an advent theme: Hope – Peace – Joy – Love

2. Choose a short passage of scripture. Suggestions from the Advent lectionary include:

Week 1: Isaiah 64:1-9 and Mark 13:24-37

Week 2: Isaiah 40:1-11, Mark 1:1-8

Week 3: Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11; John 1:6-8, 19-28

Week 4: Luke 1:26-38 3.

Write a short reflection, tell a story about your life that relates to the scripture. Aim for 250-500 words (2-4 paragraphs). Or write a short poem or prayer. Send it to and include your name or indicate if you would like your submission to be kept anonymous.
