Table Etiquette in Retirement

Summer Worship Series: New Beginnings
This summer, we learn more about the faith lives of our members as they reflect on what it means to embark on new beginnings.

Jesus liked to eat. More than that, he liked eating with other people. His friends, followers, strangers on the road, perceived enemies, he sat down with all of them. And in the intimate act of sharing a meal, he saw into the heart of his companions and helped them see themselves and their lives in new ways.

There’s a reason that we commemorate his ministry with the holy meal of communion…or as some call it, the Lord’s Supper. Jesus liked a good dinner party. It’s a good way to remember him.

While dining as the guest of some “perceived enemies,” he offered some tips for hosting a party (Luke 14:1-14):
When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your siblings or your relatives or rich neighbors,
in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid.

But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.
Gives the aspiring host pause, doesn’t it?

This Sunday, David R. reflects on his own new beginnings upon his retirement from working for 25 years in financing affordable housing, and what this change in his life has taught him about whom he chooses to sit next to at the banquet of life. He’s also been taking voice lessons in retirement and he and his wife, Debra, are going to sing and play the piano, too!

Come join the banquet this Sunday and consider how you want to up your dinner party game! You’ll be glad you did.

In faith,
Kent

NOTE: One “new beginning” we’re in the midst of is troubleshooting and tweaking our sound system and livestream; we’re grateful for your patience and understanding as we work to have everything shored up and in ship-shape by September!
