God’s Promises: This autumn, we’re learning alongside the youngest among us in Church School. We look at the early characters of the Hebrew scriptures and how God’s promises bring hope for the future, with guidelines on how to love God and love others in ways that bring life and hope to all.
This Sunday we skip ahead a few chapters and meet Abram and Sarai, an elderly couple who, while on a journey whose original destination was Canaan, had stopped in a town called Harran and settled there instead. In their lifetime they had lived through the deaths of Abram’s father and brother, struggled with infertility, and moved from their ancestral hometown to a new, unfamiliar land. And now, God tells Abram to pack up and leave, again, for something new.
God calls Abram and Sarai to a new beginning, with a new task and a new promise, that God will bless Abram, and Abram will be a blessing to “all peoples on earth”.
What does it mean to be blessed to be a blessing? What does it mean to trust God’s promise that we will be blessings ourselves?
