God’s Promises: Wisdom

REMINDER: Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday. Set clocks back one hour.

God’s Promises: This autumn, we’re learning alongside the youngest among us in Church School. We look at the early characters of the Hebrew scriptures and how God’s promises bring hope for the future, with guidelines on how to love God and love others in ways that bring life and hope to all.

If you were put in charge of all the games for big, church-wide party, what’s the first thing you do? Start brainstorming? Ask ChatGPT? Make a bulk order of prizes? What about ask for help?

That’s where we meet Solomon this week, though instead of being put in charge of party games, he’s in charge of the entire kingdom, and he’s feeling very, very overwhelmed. Solomon dreams that God says to him, “Ask me for whatever you want, and I’ll give it to you,” and the first thing that comes to Solomon’s mind is to ask God to help him by giving him wisdom. Not fame, fortune, power, or glory, just the wisdom needed to faithfully govern God’s people.

What does wisdom mean to you? Who are the people in your life, or in history, who serve as wisdom exemplars? What made them so wise? When have you been at your wisest? Did you know it at the time, or only in hindsight? What does it look like to try on for ourselves the “listening heart” that Solomon prays for?

Join us in worship at 11am Sunday morning in the Sanctuary and on YouTube to ponder, pray, learn, and remember together.

in faith,

Amy
