Good News: Finding Hope Amidst Grief

This summer’s worship series features members and friends Reporting the Good News, however they see it in the world around them. We look to Jesus’ inaugural sermon (Luke 4:14-19) and Isaiah 61 for our guidance about what God’s kind of Good News looks like: liberation for all of us. Summer worship is at 10am in Willett Hall.

This week we hear from member Casey, who will share the Good News of how they found, and continue to find, hope amidst grief as they mourn the death of a friend. Casey writes,

The word for gospel is translated as good news, but it also means something like an announcement – like a press release – it’s personal and political. Something we’re all very familiar with here at United Parish. Our faith is personal and political when it comes to issues like housing, social justice, equity, immigration, and safe streets. This big gospel announcement comes from the disciples written after their friend had just died. Just like mine just did.

When Matthew wrote Blessed are those who mourn, yes, he remembered that Jesus taught this. But didn’t he also miss his friend? I started rereading the gospels, this good news, from a new perspective. From the idea that the disciples had just lost their friend, their leader — for them it was personal, political, and spiritual. Everything is.”

Join us on Sunday morning in Willett Hall and online to sing, pray, and hear Casey report the Good News!

In faith,

Amy
