This summer’s worship series features members and friends Reporting the Good News, however they see it in the world around them. We look to Jesus’ inaugural sermon (Luke 4:14-19) and Isaiah 61 for our guidance about what God’s kind of Good News looks like: liberation for all of us. Summer worship is at 10am in Willett Hall.
The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) is about an unexpected person, someone from the wrong side of the tracks, helping someone in desperate need. There was a man in a ditch who had been beaten and robbed. And the people who should have helped him, a priest and a temple assistant, passed him by, too preoccupied to stop and give help. Either they figured he deserved it, they were afraid he was dangerous or contagious, they were oblivious or they just couldn’t be bothered.
But instead, a Samaritan — again, somebody from the wrong side of the tracks — took extravagant, compassionate care of this poor guy, putting him in good hands, leaving enough money for extended care.
On Sunday, Jude, one of our perspicacious teens, will give his own take on this parable and how it’s reflected in his life. He writes:
You can’t think of Samaritan without thinking of the word good. The word Samaritan has become synonymous with goodness and being a good neighbor. Looking at this story, what if he would have let himself be held back by what others thought about him? What if this would have prevented him from helping the injured man on the street. Thinking about this story, I stop and think about what helps me overcome limitations and labels from others or I may place on me. I have found that for me, it’s through art that I’m able to most connect to that scripture that I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).
