This summer’s worship series features members and friends Reporting the Good News, however they see it in the world around them. We look to Jesus’ inaugural sermon (Luke 4:14-19) and Isaiah 61 for our guidance about what God’s kind of Good News looks like: liberation for all of us. Summer worship is at 10am in Willett Hall.
Over the past decade, our building has increasingly become a hub for many community groups doing great work in around Brookline. It’s one of the reasons we were able to land that big Community Preservation Act grant (more here and here). We now number 35+ of these groups, with about 1,000 or more people coming through our doors everyday. They include arts groups, social justice organizations, recovery groups. While many people in these organizations may not identify as active Christians, they are, in fact, doing Good News kind of work — the kind that Isaiah and Jesus talked about, which we discussed at the launch of this summertime series. They are, in fact, an extension of our congregation’s mission.
We are looking for new ways for our worshiping congregation and these groups to get to know one another better.
On Sunday, Deborah Brown, the feisty, smart, big-hearted, justice-warrior president of the Brookline Community Development Corporation (BCDC), is going to let us in on some of the Good News work that they do. She’s also going to let us know the bad news that makes the Good News work necessary. A Texas Baptist by origin, she’ll ground us in Isaiah (chapter 58) and Proverbs (19:17) and how that compels her work, and the work that God gives ALL of us to do.
I’m excited for you to get to know Deborah and BCDC better, so I ask that you make it a priority to come on Sunday and/or tune in online. We’ve been steadily building our case for the central importance of Good News in our faith life — see the lineup below.
We’ll also welcome back our beloved Music Minister Susan from her four months of sabbatical and vacation. She’s ready for us!
